A Warm, Architectural Kitchen Designed for Everyday Living

This Redditch project is a great example of how considered materials and precise craftsmanship can transform a large open-plan space into something both striking and welcoming. Our brief was to create a kitchen that felt architectural and refined, yet warm enough to be lived in every day – a space that would age gracefully rather than chase short-lived trends.

The result is a bespoke kitchen that balances clean-lined modern design with the richness and tactility of natural timber.

Project Overview

The layout was carefully planned to anchor the room while maintaining clear sightlines and natural flow. Full-height storage along one wall creates a strong visual rhythm, while the island introduces a social focal point – ideal for casual dining, cooking, and entertaining.

Rather than relying on multiple finishes, we allowed a small palette of materials to do the heavy lifting. The depth of the dark oak cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the pale worktops, creating a calm but confident presence within the space.

Key design considerations included:

  • Maximising storage without visual clutter
  • Integrating appliances seamlessly into tall cabinetry
  • Creating a generous island that doubles as a social hub
  • Maintaining balance between warmth and minimalis

Materials and Finishes

Every material was chosen with longevity, usability, and aesthetic harmony in mind.

  • Oak veneer slab doors in a rich dark oak finish, offering a clean, contemporary look while retaining the warmth of real timber
  • Solid oak pull handles, adding subtle texture and reinforcing the handcrafted feel
  • Tobacco walnut-effect carcasses, ensuring internal finishes are as considered as the exterior
  • Corian Nimbus Prima worktops, selected for their soft veining, durability, and seamless finish
  • Integrated Corian sinks, coved upstands, and window sills, creating a continuous, hygienic surface that flows effortlessly through the room

The Corian detailing in particular elevates the kitchen, allowing for crisp lines, gentle curves, and a tactile quality that feels both refined and practical.

Challenges & Thoughtful Solutions

One of the main challenges was ensuring the tall cabinetry felt intentional rather than overpowering. By carefully proportioning the doors and aligning grain direction across units, the run feels calm and architectural rather than heavy.

The island also required precise detailing, with clean waterfall edges and neatly integrated appliances. Careful coordination between cabinetry and worktop fabrication ensured every junction was crisp, seamless, and visually balanced.

The Finished Result

The completed kitchen feels confident, calm, and deeply considered. Natural light plays across the oak surfaces throughout the day, while the pale worktops lift the space and keep it feeling open.

Most importantly, the kitchen works beautifully for everyday life – from busy mornings to relaxed evenings entertaining friends and family. The client was delighted with both the aesthetic and the practicality, commenting on how intuitive and enjoyable the space feels to use.

A Kitchen Designed to Last

This Redditch kitchen reflects what we believe bespoke design should be – thoughtful, personal, and built around the way you actually live. By focusing on proportion, material quality, and long-term usability, we’ve created a kitchen that will continue to feel relevant and rewarding for years to come.

A Personal Journey with Matthew James

At Matthew James Kitchens, we've been at the heart of homes for generations, watching kitchen trends evolve while staying true to timeless craftsmanship. As a family-run business deeply rooted in our community, we understand that your kitchen is more than just a room—it's the soul of your home.

Have a question?

As a family-run business that values transparency, we understand the importance of timing. Every kitchen is unique, just like the families we serve. Typically, from initial design to the final polished surface, a bespoke kitchen can take anywhere typically from 3 - 4 weeks to 6 weeks if a project is incredibly complex. But rest assured, we'll work closely with you to ensure the process fits seamlessly into your life.

This is where our expertise truly shines. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, as each home and homeowner has different needs. We take pride in sitting down with you, perhaps over a cup of tea in our showroom, to understand how you live, cook, and entertain. Whether it's a classic work triangle or a more modern zoned approach, we'll craft a layout that's as functional as it is beautiful

This is a question we get asked all the time. In our experience, clever storage solutions are the unsung heroes of a well-designed kitchen. From pull-out pantries to bespoke corner units, we have a myriad of tricks up our sleeves to ensure every inch of your kitchen works hard. After all, a clutter-free kitchen is a joy to cook in, whether you're whipping up a quick weekday dinner or hosting a grand Sunday roast for the family.
