There’s a quiet confidence to a well-crafted kitchen – one that doesn’t shout for attention, but instead rewards you with considered detail, balance, and ease of use every single day.
This Quinton project is a perfect example of that philosophy in practice. A refined Shaker design, finished in a soft stone grey, carefully tailored to create a space that feels calm, cohesive, and effortlessly functional.
Project Overview
This kitchen was designed with simplicity and flow at its core – a space that feels connected from end to end, without interruption or visual clutter.
We introduced a full run of bespoke cabinetry, combining practical storage with subtle design features to elevate the overall aesthetic:
- Clean-lined Shaker doors for timeless appeal
- Integrated tall housing to neatly contain appliances
- Glazed display cabinets to break up solid runs and introduce lightness
- Under-cabinet lighting to create warmth and depth across the worktop
- A carefully considered layout that allows the room to breathe
The result is a kitchen that feels structured yet relaxed – a space that works just as beautifully day-to-day as it does visually.
Materials & Finishes
Every material in this kitchen was selected not just for appearance, but for how it performs over time.
- Cabinetry – Bespoke Shaker kitchen in a stone grey finish, offering a soft, neutral palette that complements both natural and artificial light
- Worktops – 20mm Mirostone in Broadway (Group 3), delivering a seamless, durable surface with a subtle, understated texture
- Appliances – Fully integrated NEFF appliance suite, combining reliability with clean, modern lines
- Tap & Sink Area – Brushed steel Franke Eiger tap paired with a minimalist sink setup for a refined, uncluttered finish
- Flooring – Warm wood tones to contrast the cabinetry and introduce natural depth to the space
Each element works in harmony – nothing competing, everything considered.
Challenges & Design Solutions
As with many homes, the challenge wasn’t a lack of space – it was about using it more intelligently.
1. Maintaining Visual Flow
Long runs of cabinetry can easily feel heavy or repetitive.
- We introduced glazed display units to break up the run and reflect light back into the room.
2. Balancing Practicality with Aesthetics
This kitchen needed to work hard without looking busy.
- Integrated appliances and consistent handle choices ensured a clean, uninterrupted look.
3. Creating Warmth in a Neutral Scheme
Neutral kitchens can sometimes feel flat if not handled correctly.
- Under-cabinet lighting and textured worktops add depth and warmth throughout the space.
4. Maximising Everyday Usability
The layout was refined to ensure everything sits exactly where it’s needed.
- Generous drawer storage and clear worktop zones make day-to-day use effortless.
The Result
The finished kitchen is calm, practical, and quietly refined – a space that feels intuitive to use and pleasing to be in.
Natural light from the window enhances the soft stone tones, while the lighting and material choices ensure the kitchen remains warm and inviting throughout the day and into the evening.
Most importantly, it delivers exactly what a kitchen should – a space that supports everyday life without compromise.
A Space Designed to Last
This Quinton project reflects what we believe great kitchen design should be: thoughtful, tailored, and built to last.
At Matthew James Kitchens, we don’t just create kitchens – we guide you through a design journey, ensuring every decision has purpose and every detail contributes to the whole.
If you’re looking to create a kitchen in Birmingham, that feels considered, cohesive, and truly your own, we’d be delighted to help.
Why Choose Matthew James Kitchens
We were responsible for ensuring that from the initial drawings through the final fit-out, all elements including cabinetry, appliances, finishes and on-site trade work would result in a high quality finish. Each detail; scribes, shadows, gaps and mitered joints were planned carefully so the rooms are built with a craftsman’s attention to detail as opposed to merely being constructed.
If you’d like us to assess your current space to see if it could be completed at an equal level of functionality and finish, we’d love to assist you in doing so – please stop by one of our two Design Centers (Birmingham & Bromsgrove) to begin your design process.

Have a question?
As a family-run business that values transparency, we understand the importance of timing. Every kitchen is unique, just like the families we serve. Typically, from initial design to the final polished surface, a bespoke kitchen can take anywhere typically from 3 - 4 weeks to 6 weeks if a project is incredibly complex. But rest assured, we'll work closely with you to ensure the process fits seamlessly into your life.
This is where our expertise truly shines. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, as each home and homeowner has different needs. We take pride in sitting down with you, perhaps over a cup of tea in our showroom, to understand how you live, cook, and entertain. Whether it's a classic work triangle or a more modern zoned approach, we'll craft a layout that's as functional as it is beautiful
This is a question we get asked all the time. In our experience, clever storage solutions are the unsung heroes of a well-designed kitchen. From pull-out pantries to bespoke corner units, we have a myriad of tricks up our sleeves to ensure every inch of your kitchen works hard. After all, a clutter-free kitchen is a joy to cook in, whether you're whipping up a quick weekday dinner or hosting a grand Sunday roast for the family.
