A Thoughtfully Crafted Transformation

Every kitchen tells a story – not just of design, but of how a space is lived in, used, and ultimately transformed. This Halesowen project is a perfect example of how considered design and expert craftsmanship can completely redefine a home.

What was once a segmented, dated layout has been reimagined into a bright, cohesive kitchen that balances timeless shaker styling with modern functionality. Every detail has been carefully considered to ensure the finished space not only looks beautiful, but works effortlessly for everyday life.

Before & After

The Original Space

The original layout was functional but restrictive – a narrow galley kitchen paired with a separate adjoining room that limited both light and flow. Storage was inconsistent, worktop space was minimal, and the overall aesthetic felt tired and disconnected.

This is a common challenge in many homes we work with – spaces that have potential but require thoughtful redesign to truly unlock it.

The Finished Kitchen

The transformation is striking.

By opening up the space and reworking the layout, we created a kitchen that feels both expansive and purposeful. The soft shaker cabinetry, paired with clean white Corian worktops, delivers a timeless aesthetic, while clever storage solutions ensure the space performs as beautifully as it looks.

Every element was selected not just for appearance, but for how it contributes to the overall experience of the space.

Project Overview

This project centred around delivering a fully bespoke shaker kitchen with a strong emphasis on practicality, durability, and clean, cohesive design.

Key elements included:

  • Wide shaker cabinetry with bevelled doors for a classic yet refined look
  • Cabinetry extending into the lounge area, including a bespoke painted open bookcase
  • A fully integrated appliance suite for a seamless finish
  • Thoughtfully designed storage solutions to maximise every inch of space
  • Clean, uninterrupted work surfaces to enhance both usability and aesthetics

The goal was simple – to create a kitchen that feels calm, organised, and built to last.

Materials & Specification

Every material was selected not just for appearance, but for performance and longevity.

  • Wide shaker doors with a bevel detail
  • Painted finish in a soft, muted tone
  • Matching end panels, plinths and cornice for a fully cohesive look

  • Corian worktops in White Onyx
  • Seamless joins and integrated sink for a clean, modern finish

Appliances

  • Neff appliance suite including:
    • Slide & Hide oven
    • Combination oven and microwave
    • Gas on glass hob
    • Integrated fridge freezer
    • Integrated dishwasher
  • Miro canopy extractor for discreet yet effective ventilation

Tap & Water System

  • Quooker boiling water tap with Pro3 tank
  • Integrated filtered cold water
  • Scale control system for longevity and performance

Storage & Features

  • Space tower larder pull-out
  • LeMans corner system for otherwise wasted space
  • Integrated pull-out bin system
  • Painted glass splashback
  • Sliding patio doors with integrated blinds

Challenges & Solutions

1. Restricted Layout

The original galley-style layout limited movement and made the space feel enclosed.

Solution:
We reworked the flow of the room, opening up the space and creating a more natural, ergonomic layout that improves both usability and visual openness.

2. Lack of Cohesion Between Spaces

The kitchen and adjoining areas felt disconnected, both visually and functionally.

Solution:
By extending cabinetry into the lounge area and incorporating a bespoke bookcase, we created a unified design language that ties the entire space together.

3. Limited Storage

The existing kitchen lacked practical, accessible storage.

Solution:
We introduced intelligent storage solutions including larder pull-outs, corner mechanisms, and integrated systems that maximise every available space without cluttering the design.

4. Desire for a Timeless Finish

The client wanted a kitchen that wouldn’t date quickly.

Solution:
We focused on classic shaker styling, neutral tones, and high-quality materials such as Corian, ensuring the kitchen remains elegant and relevant for years to come.

The Result

The finished kitchen is a perfect balance of form and function.

It feels lighter, more open, and significantly more usable. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern features creates a space that is both welcoming and highly practical.

From the seamless worktops to the carefully integrated storage, every detail contributes to a kitchen that works effortlessly for everyday life.

Most importantly, the client now has a space that not only meets their needs, but enhances how they live in their home.

Why Choose Matthew James Kitchens

We were responsible for ensuring that from the initial drawings through the final fit-out, all elements including cabinetry, appliances, finishes and on-site trade work would result in a high quality finish. Each detail; scribes, shadows, gaps and mitered joints were planned carefully so the rooms are built with a craftsman’s attention to detail as opposed to merely being constructed.

If you’d like us to assess your current space to see if it could be completed at an equal level of functionality and finish, we’d love to assist you in doing so – please stop by one of our two Design Centers (Birmingham & Bromsgrove) to begin your design process.

A Personal Journey with Matthew James

At Matthew James Kitchens, we've been at the heart of homes for generations, watching kitchen trends evolve while staying true to timeless craftsmanship. As a family-run business deeply rooted in our community, we understand that your kitchen is more than just a room—it's the soul of your home.

Have a question?

As a family-run business that values transparency, we understand the importance of timing. Every kitchen is unique, just like the families we serve. Typically, from initial design to the final polished surface, a bespoke kitchen can take anywhere typically from 3 - 4 weeks to 6 weeks if a project is incredibly complex. But rest assured, we'll work closely with you to ensure the process fits seamlessly into your life.

This is where our expertise truly shines. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, as each home and homeowner has different needs. We take pride in sitting down with you, perhaps over a cup of tea in our showroom, to understand how you live, cook, and entertain. Whether it's a classic work triangle or a more modern zoned approach, we'll craft a layout that's as functional as it is beautiful

This is a question we get asked all the time. In our experience, clever storage solutions are the unsung heroes of a well-designed kitchen. From pull-out pantries to bespoke corner units, we have a myriad of tricks up our sleeves to ensure every inch of your kitchen works hard. After all, a clutter-free kitchen is a joy to cook in, whether you're whipping up a quick weekday dinner or hosting a grand Sunday roast for the family.
