At Matthew James Kitchens, we believe a kitchen should feel effortless to live in – even when the design behind it is anything but simple.
This Bewdley project is a perfect example of how considered design and true craftsmanship can transform a space that feels disconnected into one that flows naturally, both visually and practically. It wasn’t about starting again – it was about understanding the space properly, solving its challenges, and elevating how it works for everyday life.
Project Overview
Our clients, a couple based in a village near Bewdley, were extending their home to introduce a separate utility room. While their existing kitchen was generous in size, it lacked cohesion.
The space opened into a semi open-plan dining and lounge area, but rather than feeling connected, it read as three separate rooms. Despite the continuous tiled flooring, there was no visual or functional flow.
The Key Issues
- A layout that felt disjointed and inefficient
- An undersized island that lacked presence and purpose
- Awkward ceiling heights and structural beams
- Window positions that restricted standard cabinetry layouts
- No clear transition between kitchen, dining and living spaces
Our role was to reimagine the space entirely – not just improving how it looked, but how it worked.
Our Approach
We retained only the position of the sink and freestanding American fridge. Everything else was carefully reconsidered.
The design centred around creating:
- A strong visual and functional anchor within the space
- Seamless transitions between zones
- Balanced proportions across cabinetry and walkways
- Intelligent storage that enhances day-to-day usability
Materials & Features
This kitchen blends classic in-frame craftsmanship with carefully considered material choices to create a space that feels timeless, yet completely tailored.
- In-frame Shaker cabinetry in Hartford Blue – grounding the space with depth and character, while maintaining a refined, traditional aesthetic
- Putty-painted island – introduced to soften the scheme and create contrast, preventing the space from feeling too heavy
- 30mm Kashmir Gold granite worktops – selected for their natural movement and warmth, tying together both colour palettes while adding a subtle sense of luxury
- Bespoke island design – featuring full-depth drawers and cabinetry on the working side, paired with reduced-depth spice storage to the rear to maintain comfortable circulation space
- Angled base units – carefully crafted to resolve awkward transitions and allow the kitchen to flow naturally around the room
- Custom microwave housing with integrated shelf – incorporating a push-to-open surface, creating a practical landing space exactly where it’s needed
- Bespoke drinks cabinet – extending into the dining area, with worktops continuing through to visually and physically connect the spaces
Every element was designed not in isolation, but as part of a wider composition – ensuring the kitchen feels cohesive from every angle.
Overcoming Challenges
This project required a highly considered approach to ensure the design worked with the architecture, rather than fighting against it.
Working With Awkward Architecture
Uneven ceiling heights, beams and window placements meant that off-the-shelf solutions would have resulted in compromises. Instead, we introduced bespoke angled cabinetry and tailored proportions throughout, allowing each section of the kitchen to sit comfortably within the space.
Creating A True Sense Of Flow
Although the flooring ran continuously through the kitchen, dining and lounge, the layout previously lacked connection.
We addressed this by:
- Extending worktop lines into adjoining areas
- Introducing aligned sightlines across cabinetry
- Using consistent materials and detailing throughout
- Designing transitional units that guide movement naturally through the space
The result is a kitchen that feels like part of a whole, rather than a separate zone.
Designing For Real Use
Beyond aesthetics, the kitchen needed to function effortlessly day to day.
The redesigned island plays a key role here – not just as a visual centrepiece, but as a highly practical working area. By carefully balancing storage depth and walkway space, we ensured the kitchen remains comfortable to move through, even when in use.
The Result
The finished space is calm, balanced and effortlessly functional.
The enlarged island now anchors the room with purpose, while the angled cabinetry subtly guides movement through the space. The contrast between Hartford Blue and Putty adds depth without overpowering the room, and the granite worktops bring everything together with quiet elegance.
What once felt like three disconnected areas now reads as one cohesive environment – a space designed not just to look beautiful, but to enhance how the home is lived in every day.
Showcase
This project perfectly illustrates the value of truly bespoke kitchen design.
It’s not simply about replacing cabinetry – it’s about understanding how a space works, identifying what’s holding it back, and designing solutions that feel both natural and refined.
At Matthew James Kitchens, we take pride in creating kitchens that stand the test of time – not just in their durability, but in how well they continue to serve the people who use them.
If you’re looking to transform your kitchen into a space that feels more connected, considered and effortlessly functional, we’d be delighted to guide you through that journey.
Why Choose Matthew James Kitchens
We were responsible for ensuring that from the initial drawings through the final fit-out, all elements including cabinetry, appliances, finishes and on-site trade work would result in a high quality finish. Each detail; scribes, shadows, gaps and mitered joints were planned carefully so the rooms are built with a craftsman’s attention to detail as opposed to merely being constructed.
If you’d like us to assess your current space to see if it could be completed at an equal level of functionality and finish, we’d love to assist you in doing so – please stop by one of our two Design Centers (Birmingham & Bromsgrove) to begin your design process.
